Le superstizioni sui gatti neri risalgono al Medioevo, quando si credeva avessero uno stretto legame con la magia nera e la stregoneria. In alcuni casi i gatti neri erano ritenuti essere addirittura delle streghe camuffate. Questo portò purtroppo molti gatti ad essere puniti insieme alle donne, in Europa prima e nel Massachusetts qualche secolo dopo.
